Aim High educators are the secret sauce to what makes Aim High so special for many students, summer after summer. Meet Tasha Yee, a current Aim High Virtual Site Administrator, a 5th & 6th grade Science teacher and a Sustainability Co-Coordinator at an independent school in Corte Madera. Tasha has worked with Aim High for 13 summers and has been committed to making sure students think critically about the world around them, feel seen and are heard. With over a decade of teaching experience, Tasha has been a role model for countless educators. Tasha recently joined Aim High’s STEAM challenge curriculum development team where she helped develop engaging activities that involved science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Do you want to learn more about Tasha? Below, Tasha shares her journey as an educator. Why did you decide to go into the teaching profession? Both of my parents worked in education their whole lives and were involved in their communities in a variety of ways so I was always influenced by their work and philosophy of giving back. I’ve also always had a knack and affinity for connecting with youth, whether it was my younger cousins or students I mentored so education was a natural path for me. What do you love most about teaching? Students are naturally inquisitive and I love helping foster this mindset and encouraging them to explore the world around them. In addition, not only do I get to share my love for learning, I also get to learn from my students! How did you get started teaching at Aim High? In 2001, I was introduced to Aim High by Shafia Zaloom, a former Aim High Trustee, who knew my cousin. That summer, my cousin and I were hired as high school teaching assistants for the Yick Wo campus (now the Chinatown campus) which was then directed by Shafia and Matt Reno. Within a few summers, I was promoted to a Lead Humanities Teacher. After pursuing other things, including a teaching credential, I returned in 2011 as a Science teacher and then became a Site Director in 2013. Why do you continue to work with Aim High summer after summer? Aim High has become my summer “home.” The faculty & staff collective passion and dedication to create “Aim High Magic” make my summers fun and rejuvenating! It doesn’t feel like work because I love doing it! What do you do for fun/self-care? I enjoy exploring nature and visiting different trails around the Bay Area. I also love traveling to new places and learning about the culture and history of a country…and of course, trying the local cuisine! What kind of impact do you hope to have on your students? I hope that my students will become critical thinkers who share their knowledge and compassion with the world. I like to remind them that even one little action can make a difference and my wish is that they make positive ripples wherever they go. Tasha is making positive ripples with students at Aim High summer after summer. Aim High wants to thank Tasha for her dedication to creating life-changing opportunities for middle school students during the summer and beyond.
