Winner # 1: STOP in the name of…
Three teachers at Aim High Urban ask you to stop in the name of safety. Safety Day is an Aim High tradition that helps Aim High kids learn to be safe in school, in their communities, and at play.
Winner #2: (Not Your) Average 7th Grader
7th grade math classes at Lick studied mean, median and mode by measuring all of their major appendages, finding the group’s average for each appendage, and rendering those averages in butcher paper, newspaper, manila folders and masking tape. The paper student may be perfectly average, but this math class is anything but!
Winner #3: (Untitled)
Students in Aim High Lick Wilmerding’s BMW (BART, MUNI, Walk) afternoon activity escaped foggy Ingleside for the Mission, Dolores Park, and the Bi-Rite Creamery. But why are they pointing at the sky? Explains teacher Zack Miller, “Everyone has ice cream in one hand, but it can’t stop them from holding up the “Champions on Top” finger with the other hand,” which is, we are told, a Lick-Wilmerding hand-signal tradition dating back to a rousing and heated pre-class huddle. The BMW activity takes advantage of SF’s public transportation system to give students the chance to explore neighborhoods all over the city.
Winner #4: Jump Around
Science teacher Oscar Mancillas is captured mid-leap as he teaches capoeira to two sixth graders as part of an afternoon activity at Aim High SF Community. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, games, music, and dance. Afternoon activities are a vital component of the Aim High model, creating a space for fun, creativity, learning, and community-building; each site offers different activities based on the interests of students, the resources of the community and site, and the skills and passions of their staff.
