If it takes a village to inspire one student, how many does it take to inspire thousands of them? In ten days, Aim High will open the doors of eighteen campuses across Northern California to 2,300 middle school students. During these next ten days–before our 33rd summer officially begins–we will feature ten people who make Aim High come alive, on Facebook, Instagram, and right here on our blog. They will share what community means to them, why Aim High matters, and what keeps them coming back year after year. If you’re moved by what you see, let’s write the next chapter of our story together. Literally no matter what surprises come our way, or whatever challenges crop up in the school year, we do everything we can to rally around our kids and make sure they have the most incredible summers possible.
Day 3: Matt Reno, Director of Program, Aim High HQ
https://www.instagram.com/p/BkIuhDRlW4J/?taken-by=aimhighprogramMy favorite summertime memory as a child was having the opportunity to do something different. For me it was my grandparents. They lived in Morgan Hill, which at the time in the late 60s was not yet a San Jose suburb. It was the country. My grandparents had a couple of acres with chickens, sheep, rabbits, vegetables, warm weather, and a creek. It allowed me, a city kid, to have a very different experience and opportunity during the summer—and I think that’s what Aim High provides their middle school students, a different opportunity.

When I started with Aim High as a teacher and then a site director, I really felt like Aim High was my hobby. In 2004, when I applied to be the Director of Operations I had the opportunity to make this hobby my full-time job. I am not directly on the ground and in classrooms anymore, but instead I am supporting the leaders that support the sites so the sites can support the teachers and the teachers can make the connections with kids and show them that education can be different and that they are special.Day 3: Elaine Mak, Aim High Parent
As a parent, I believe that Aim High provides an excellent learning platform for students during the summer. And it isn’t just an academic program, it is a community. Although learning can be challenging at times, it can teach you how to become a better person in your own life, and students are given the opportunity to explore subjects and interests that are not provided inside the school.Day 4: Ana Chowdhury, Aim High Board of Trustees Member
I stay connected to Aim High because the program is making a positive impact on closing the academic achievement gap between students of different socioeconomic backgrounds. The Aim High community is made up of caring people that…inspire students to reach for their highest academic potential.Day 5: Tommy Ng, Aim High Alumnus
I was inspired by the Aim High CORE values as a student of the program (Community, Opportunity, Respect, High Expectations) and I went on to receive my Master’s and Credential in Mathematics. Upon receiving my credential, I accepted a teaching position in the Excelsior district to give back to the community where I grew up.Day 6: Jacqueline Thompson, Aim High Young Leaders Board Co-Chair
The Aim High community is resilient. I feel like the people who are connected and working for Aim High, whether its students, parents or central staff/summer employees, have a pervasive, palpable can-do attitude. Literally no matter what surprises come our way in the summer or whatever challenges might crop up in the school year we are going to do everything we can to rally around our kids and make sure they have the most incredible summers possible.Day 7: Veronica Wright, Aim High Student The thing that I value the most about Aim High is the fact that everybody is so connected with each other and because kids choose to spend their summers there. The community is accepting, inclusive and supportive. And if you love what you’re learning, I feel like it makes it easier to achieve your academic goals. Day 8: Day 9: Day 10: [/hide]
