With Aim High’s 30th Anniversary Gala happening next week, now is the perfect time to introduce our incredible and inspiring honorees of 2016.
Aim High is proud to celebrate the work of our Distinguished Alumna, Michelle Cody, Distinguished Educator, Vince Matthews, and Visionary Leader, the Golden State Warriors Community Foundation:
Michelle Cody – Distinguished Alumna
Michelle is a beloved member of the Aim High community. Seventeen years ago, Michelle joined Aim High as a student. She then went on to work as a Teaching Assistant, Teaching Intern, and Dean of Students. Today, she is the founding Site Director at Willie Brown Jr. Middle School in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood, where she also teaches during the school year.
One of the many things Michelle loves about Aim High is how it is “a place for teachers and students to work together to create better versions of themselves.” We are thrilled and grateful to recognize Michelle and the work she has done in the Aim High community.
“I was designed to do this. I am meant to be here,” Michelle says in regards to her leadership at Aim High. We couldn’t agree more.
Vince Matthews – Distinguished Educator
Vince’s inspiring career in education spans 30 years. He credits Aim High for helping to shape the values he has held throughout his career: “I appreciated the opportunity to work at Aim High as it framed many of the tenets I’ve carried with me over the years.”
Vince taught at the George Washington Carver School in Bayview before serving in administrative positions throughout the Bay Area. He later went on to become the Superintendent for Oakland Unified School District and then the San Jose Unified School District, for which he drew high praise. In a 2015 EdSource article, San Jose Teacher Association President Jennifer Thomas said, “He established an openness with the leadership of the district and fostered the idea that every teacher should have a voice.” Today, Vince serves as the State Administrator/Superintendent for the Inglewood Unified School District in Los Angeles County.
Aim High is a family affair for Vince Matthews. Not only did he work for five summers with Aim High in the Excelsior and Ingleside neighborhoods, but his children taught with Aim High, too. One of his daughters, Arianna, is now an Aim High Site Director in Oakland.
Aim High is so proud to honor Vince Matthews, and looks forward to witnessing all of his future accomplishments.
Golden State Warriors Foundation – Visionary Leader
Dub-nation should be proud of the work the Warriors do both on and off the court.
Since 2012, the Warriors Community Foundation has been committed to supporting underserved youth in the San Francisco Bay Area. The foundation has awarded over $5 million through community grants and partnerships with local non-profit organizations. They have also refurbished more than 60 basketball courts in an effort to revitalize communities with safe, clean places where families can enjoy basketball.
