This fall, Aim High is offering two virtual workshops for current 8th graders and their families. As distance learning continues to widen opportunity gaps, we are committed to doing more to combat its effects. Our goal is for students to be more prepared when schools reopen and for their upcoming transition to high school. High School Opportunity + Action Plan Our four-part after school workshop series prepares 8th graders for the transition to high school. The class promotes curiosity and goal-setting. After participating, students will:

• Deepen their curiosity about high school opportunities.
• Understand the various academic and extracurricular activities at their high school(s) of choice.
• Develop an opportunity and action plan for all four years of high school.

By the end of the workshop, students will become more curious, practice long-term thinking, and trust that they can accomplish whatever they set their minds to. These skills are a powerful antidote to the opportunity gap; when developed, students are more likely to graduate on-time from high school and matriculate into college. High School Application Support We’re also assisting Aim High 8th graders with high school applications to charter and independent schools. In this workshop series, students finalize their list of high schools, learn about the application process, craft their personal essays and practice making strong first impressions for the interview process. Participants receive real time feedback and one-on-one support from their peers and Aim High staff. The program has a secondary track for parents/guardians to learn about financial aid, the parent essay and application process, and understand their child’s application status and how to support them. Parents/guardians are also invited to schedule one-on-one appointments for specific questions about their child’s application.
