The Importance of STEM

At Aim High, classes in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) introduce our students to valuable skillsets that have real-world application. Research shows students fall behind an average of two months in math knowledge during the summer. Our focus on STEM recognizes the importance of science and technology in everyday life.  It demonstrates to students that it’s just as critical to their future. We expose students to a future field of study that could propel them toward a career in one of these fast-growing industries. Our math coursework is aligned to Common Core Standards; our science curriculum aligns with Next Generation Science Standards, which addresses how to provide all students an internationally-benchmarked science education. We get our students excited about science and math. Whether it’s multiplying fractions or making a solar water heater, our STEM classes are taught in an ideal setting for sparking discovery. We emphasize active learning over lecturing. Our small class sizes and a collaborative approach to teaching create a supportive environment. Our emphasis on project-based learning ensures a hands-on, collaborative experience. Building a balloon car teaches students a lesson in physics as well as teamwork. Our enrichment electives are also an extension of STEM. From learning how to code to field trips to the Exploratorium, we offer exciting opportunities that are a powerful catalyst for discovery.

STEM Up Close: “Barbie Bungee”

One of our math projects takes a unique approach to learning linear regression. With the “Barbie Bungee” activity, students learn an important math lesson with just a Barbie doll and rubber bands. The objective is to simulate a successful bungee jump by seeing how many rubber bands should be used for Barbie. Working in teams, students actively participate in every facet of conducting an experiment, including forming a hypothesis and recording data. It’s problem solving, critical thinking, mathematical reasoning … and it’s fun.
